How to Take the Wegovy Pill – A Safety Guide

Wegovy has always meant a weekly injection pen – until now.

In June 2026, the MHRA approved a new once-daily Wegovy tablet, the first GLP-1 medicine licensed as a tablet specifically for weight management in the UK.

If you’ve been prescribed the Wegovy pill, or you’re weighing it up against the familiar injection, how you take it matters just as much as the dose itself: get the timing wrong and your body may not absorb the medicine properly.

This guide covers the food and drink rules, when to take your tablet, how to store it, what side effects to expect, and how it differs from Wegovy’s injection pen.

What Is the Wegovy Pill?

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection pen, in an oral form. It uses an absorption technology called SNAC to survive the stomach and reach the bloodstream.

It’s licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27–29.9 with a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Right now, the Wegovy pill is available on private prescription only.

It hasn’t yet been approved for NHS use in Scotland or the rest of the UK, which is subject to a separate cost-effectiveness review.

Because it’s a newly licensed medicine, Wegovy tablets are under additional monitoring, and any side effects should be reported through the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.

Food and Drink Restrictions: Why Timing Is Everything

Unlike the Wegovy injection, which can be taken at any time of day regardless of food, the tablet is strict about timing because food significantly reduces how much semaglutide your body absorbs.

Getting this wrong doesn’t just risk discomfort, it risks the medicine not working as well as it should.

The rule is straightforward: take your tablet on an empty stomach, after at least 8 hours without food.

Then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything other than plain water, or take any other oral medicines.

Coffee, tea, juice, and other tablets or supplements all count, and taking them too soon can interfere with absorption.

How and When to Take Your Wegovy Tablet

  • Take it first thing in the morning, before breakfast, so the overnight fast and 30-minute wait fit naturally around your day.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water, no more than 120ml. Don’t split, crush or chew it, as this can affect how the medicine is released.
  • Take it at roughly the same time each day. A consistent routine also makes it easier to notice if you’ve missed a dose.
  • Your prescriber will start you on a low dose and review it over the following months, gradually increasing it if appropriate. Don’t adjust your own dose – check with your pharmacist or prescriber if you’re ever unsure what strength you should be taking.
  • If you forget a dose, don’t double up. Skip it and take your next tablet as normal the following day, fasted as usual. Ask your pharmacist if you’re not sure what to do.

How to Store Wegovy Tablets

The Wegovy injection needs to be stored in the fridge, while tablets are much easier to store.

Keep them in their original blister pack to protect them from light and moisture, and don’t push a tablet out until you’re ready to take it.

The tablets are much easier to travel with, as you do not need to plan how to keep them cool during transit.

It’s still worth keeping them somewhere cool, dry and consistent, and well out of reach of children.

Wegovy Pill Side Effects: What to Expect

Most side effects settle down as your body adjusts, especially in the first few weeks or after a dose increase.

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or a feeling of fullness
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Stomach pain or indigestion
  • Headache
  • Tiredness or dizziness

Contact your prescriber or pharmacist promptly if you notice anything more serious, including:

  • Severe, persistent abdominal pain that may spread to your back (a possible sign of pancreatitis)
  • Signs of gallbladder problems, such as pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rapid heartbeat
  • Sudden changes in vision

This isn’t a complete list. Always read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medicine, and report side effects through the Yellow Card Scheme (yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk) or to your pharmacy team.

Wegovy Pill vs Wegovy Injection: What’s the Difference?

Both contain the same active ingredient, but the way you take them, and the routine that comes with each, is quite different.

Wegovy Pill Wegovy Injection
Frequency Once daily Once weekly
Food rules Fasted 8 hours before, 30 minutes after None – take at any time
Storage Room temperature, protect from light and moisture Requires refrigeration before first use
How it’s taken Swallowed whole with water Injected under the skin (abdomen, thigh or upper arm)
Dose is measured in Milligrams – higher numbers, due to lower oral absorption Milligrams – lower numbers, absorbed directly

Despite the different numbers on the label, both forms are designed to reach broadly comparable levels of semaglutide in your bloodstream when taken correctly.

The right choice often comes down to personal preference: whether you’d rather manage a daily fasting routine or a weekly injection, and how each fits around your lifestyle, work and any needle anxiety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have coffee before my Wegovy tablet?

No. Take your tablet first, on an empty stomach with only plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before your coffee, tea or breakfast.

Is the Wegovy pill available on the NHS?

Not currently. As of publication, the Wegovy tablet is available on private prescription only, while it goes through a separate NHS cost-effectiveness review.

What happens if I eat before the 8-hour fast is up?

Take your next dose at the correct time the following day rather than taking it fasted later in the day. Speak to your pharmacist if this happens often, as it may affect how well the medicine works for you.

Can I switch from the Wegovy injection to the tablet?

Possibly, but this should only be done under the guidance of your prescriber, who can advise on timing and dosing when moving between forms.
