The Next Generation of Weight Loss Medication: What’s on the Horizon?

For years, weight management was often framed as a simple matter of “willpower.” Now, weight loss medication is well established and new treatments are being developed.

At McMinns Pharmacy, we have seen first-hand how GLP-1 medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro have transformed lives across Wishaw and beyond.

But the science isn’t stopping there.

A new “triple-action” and “needle-free” generation of treatments is currently in clinical trials, promising to make weight management even more effective and accessible.

Here is a look at the three most exciting medications on the horizon for 2026 and 2027.

Retatrutide: The “Triple G” Agonist

While current treatments like Mounjaro target two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), Retatrutide goes a step further by targeting three: GLP-1, GIP, and Glucagon.

This “triple-agonist” approach doesn’t just suppress appetite; it is thought to actively increase the amount of energy the body burns while at rest.

In Phase 2 clinical trials, participants on the highest dose lost an average of 24.2% of their body weight over 48 weeks.

This level of efficacy begins to rival the results typically seen with bariatric surgery, making it one of the most anticipated medications in the pipeline.

Orforglipron: The Daily Pill

One of the primary barriers for many patients is the “needle phobia” associated with weekly injections.

Orforglipron aims to solve this. Unlike previous oral attempts that required strict fasting, Orforglipron is a “small-molecule” drug.

This means it is stable enough to be absorbed by the stomach regardless of when you last ate.

Taken as a once-daily tablet, it offers a discreet and convenient alternative for those who travel frequently or simply prefer a pill over a pen.

Early data suggests it could provide weight loss results comparable to current injectable therapies.

CagriSema: The Power Duo

Developed by the makers of Wegovy, CagriSema is a fixed-dose combination of Semaglutide and a new drug called Cagrilintide.

Cagrilintide mimics amylin, a hormone that signals fullness to the brain in a different way than GLP-1.

By attacking hunger through two distinct neurological pathways simultaneously, CagriSema aims to provide a more “rapid” onset of weight loss and help patients who may have hit a plateau on single-hormone treatments.

When Will These Be Available?

While these medications are making waves in the medical community, they are currently in the final stages of clinical testing (Phase 3).

  • Orforglipron and CagriSema are expected to seek UK regulatory approval (MHRA) late in 2026.
  • Retatrutide is likely to follow shortly after in 2027.
