Travel Vaccines for the Hajj or Umrah: Staying Safe on Your Pilgrimage

Embarking on the Hajj or Umrah is a profound spiritual milestone, but the physical demands and the nature of mass gatherings present unique health challenges.

With millions of pilgrims from across the globe congregating in the holy sites of Makkah and Madinah, the risk of respiratory and infectious diseases increases.

At McMinns Pharmacy, we are committed to helping our local community in Wishaw prepare for a safe and healthy journey.

Here is everything you need to know about the mandatory and recommended vaccinations for travel from the UK to Saudi Arabia in 2026.

Mandatory Vaccinations (Entry Requirements)

To obtain a Hajj or Umrah visa, the Saudi Ministry of Health requires proof of specific vaccinations. Without an official certificate, entry may be refused.

  • Meningococcal Meningitis (ACWY): All travellers aged one year and older must provide a certificate for the quadrivalent (ACWY) vaccine.
    • The 10-Day Rule: The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before your arrival in Saudi Arabia.
    • Validity: If you received a conjugate vaccine (the standard in the UK), your certificate is valid for 5 years. Older polysaccharide vaccines are only valid for 3 years.
  • COVID-19: For the 2026 season, certain high-risk groups (including those over 65, pregnant women, or those with chronic conditions) are required to show proof of an updated COVID-19 vaccination. It is highly recommended for all other pilgrims to ensure their boosters are up to date.

Recommended Vaccinations for Personal Protection

While not always legally required for your visa, these vaccinations are strongly advised by UK travel health experts to protect you during the pilgrimage:

  • Seasonal Influenza: Respiratory infections are the most common illness during Hajj. The “Hajj cough” can be severe, and the flu vaccine is the best line of defence in crowded environments.
  • Hepatitis A & B: These protect against liver infections spread through contaminated food or water (Hep A) and bodily fluids (Hep B). Hepatitis B is particularly important for men who plan to have their heads shaved by licensed barbers after completing their rituals.
  • Polio & MMR: Ensure you are up to date with your routine UK boosters. While the UK is polio-free, the mass gathering brings together people from regions where these diseases still circulate.
