Ear wax is something most of us don’t think about until it becomes a problem.
But when it builds up to the point where it affects your hearing, causes discomfort, or leaves you feeling blocked, it can have a real impact on your daily life.
The good news is that professional ear wax removal is a quick, painless, and effective solution – and it’s more accessible than you might think.
Here is everything you need to know about ear wax, what causes it to build up and how McMinns Pharmacy in Wishaw can help.
What Causes Ear Wax Build-Up?
Ear wax, or cerumen, is produced naturally by glands in the ear canal.
Its job is to protect your ears by trapping dust, bacteria, and debris before they can cause damage.
In most cases, the ear is self-cleaning – old wax naturally migrates out of the ear canal on its own.
For some people, however, this process does not always work as it should. Several factors can lead to ear wax building up:
- Anatomy: some people naturally produce more wax, or have narrower or hairier ear canals that make it harder for wax to move out
- Age: as we get older, ear wax tends to become drier and harder, making it more likely to become impacted
- Hearing aids and ear plugs: regular use can push wax further into the canal rather than allowing it to clear naturally
- Cotton buds: using them compacts wax deeper rather than removing it
- Loud noise exposure: this can affect the normal movement of wax out of the ear
In the UK, around 3.9% of the population requires ear wax management every year.
Despite this, many people are unaware that local, timely help is available – without the lengthy waiting times often associated with NHS referrals.
The Effects of Excessive Ear Wax
When wax builds up to the point of a blockage, it can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- Reduced or muffled hearing
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
- Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ear)
- Earache or mild discomfort
- Dizziness or balance difficulties in some cases
Beyond the physical discomfort, impaired hearing can have a wider impact too.
Difficulty following conversations – at work, at home, or in social settings – can lead to frustration and withdrawal.
Seeking treatment early is the simplest way to prevent these effects from worsening.
What You Should NOT Do If You Have Ear Wax Build-Up
It is tempting to try to sort the problem yourself at home, but there are a few things you should avoid.
Do not use cotton buds. This is perhaps the most common mistake. Cotton buds do not remove wax – they push it further into the ear canal, where it becomes more compacted and harder to remove professionally.
Do not use ear candles. There is no clinical evidence that ear candling works, and it carries a real risk of burns or injury to the ear.
Do not attempt to irrigate your own ears unless advised by a healthcare professional. Incorrect DIY irrigation can damage the eardrum or introduce infection.
Do not ignore the problem. Impacted wax is unlikely to clear on its own once it has built up significantly.
Leaving it untreated can worsen symptoms and make professional removal more complex.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms associated with ear wax build up, the safest step is to seek professional advice.
How Is Ear Wax Removal Carried Out?
At McMinns Pharmacy, ear wax removal is performed using microsuction – widely regarded as the safest and most effective method available.
Microsuction works by using a low-pressure suction probe to gently draw wax out of the ear canal.
One of our trained clinicians uses a microscope throughout the procedure for precise visibility, ensuring it is carried out carefully and accurately.
Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction does not involve water being squirted into the ear canal.
This makes it a cleaner, more comfortable experience with no mess and minimal risk. The procedure is painless for the vast majority of patients.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your appointment at McMinns Pharmacy will last around 30 minutes. Here is what happens:
- Initial consultation: your pharmacist will examine your ears to assess the level of wax build-up. This initial ear health check is provided at no charge.
- Microsuction: if removal is needed, the procedure is carried out quickly and comfortably in the same appointment.
- Aftercare: a free follow-up appointment is available if needed, and your clinician will advise whether a 3 or 6-month check-in interval is recommended for you going forward.
Microsuction is available for patients aged 16 and over.
For younger patients, our team can carry out an ear health check and advise on the most appropriate next steps.
Pricing is straightforward: £29 for one ear, or £54 for both ears.
